The Loosing of Satan - Part 2: "The devil that deceived them."

by Patricia Jones , February 16, 2012
I ended Part 1 of this study with the following comment and question; "Rev 20:7-8 gives us 2 reasons why Satan is loosed from his prison; #1. "To deceive the nations of the earth." and #2. "To gather them together to battle". But what does deceiving the nations of the earth have to do with gathering people to battle?"

I first needed to know why God mentions Gog and Magog in Rev 20:7-8 "And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle; the number of whom is as the sand of the sea."

When I researched the nations of Gog and Magog, I found out that Ezekiel chapter 38 has everything to do with what I have been writing about and researching for the past couple of weeks. But I cannot cover the whole chapter here, so I will only refer to what is relevant to this study. Magog was the name of a grandson of Noah and it was also the name of the region in which all the descendants of Magog lived; this chapter tells us that Jehovah was going to bring judgment against Magog.

Ezekiel 39:6 "And I will send a fire on Magog, and among them that dwell carelessly in the isles; and they shall know that I am Jehovah."

The same thing goes for Gog. Gog was a prince that ruled over the land of Gog and God also states in Ezekiel that He was against them. I highly recommend reading the entire 38th chapter of Ezekiel. It mentions the latter days, it describes a mighty army that will come against the land of Israel, it mentions that all the men that are on the face of the earth shall shake at the presence of God, it mention fire, and brimstone, and hail, and much more. But for this study, I will only quote the following passage.

Ezekiel 38:2-4 "Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal; And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords."

Now that I have covered who Gog and Magog were, I want to focus on why Rev 20:8 says that Satan "shall go out to deveive the nations which are in the four quarter of the earth, Gog and Magog."

The word that was translated into the word "deceive" in Rev 20:8 is the Greek verb "Planao" (Strong's H4105). The verb "Planao" is derived from the Greek noun, "Plane"(Strong's 4106), which means "delusion". The Greek verb "Planao" means to deceive, and it is the type of deceiving that means to lead a person or animal astray. It is what Satan did to Eve in the Garden of Eden when he "lead her astray". Even though Eve clearly understood God's commandment to not eat of that tree, Satan was able to lead her astray and convince her to eat from it. Following are verses found in the book of Revelation that use the Greek verb, "Planao".

Rev 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth[G4105] the whole world."

Rev 13:14 And deceiveth[G4105] them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast."

Rev 19:20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived[G4105] them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone."

Rev 20:3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive[G4105] the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season."

Rev 20:10 And the devil that deceived[G4105] them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever."

Now I would like to quote some other verses where the verb "Planao" is used that describe the type of  "deceiving" that will be performed by the false prophets.

Matthew 24:4 "And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive[G4105] you."

Matthew 24:5 "For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive[G4105] many."

Matthew 24:11 "And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive[G4105] many."

Matthew 24:24 "For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive[G4105] the very elect."

2 Titus 3:13 "But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving[G4105 ], and being deceived[G4105]."

2 Peter 2:15 "Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray[G4105], following the way of Balaam the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness."

Now to get back to my question about Rev 20:7-8, why is it necessary for God to loose Satan in order for him to go out to "deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog"?

It made me think of this passage of 2 Thessalonians 2. The King James version of this passage that was written 400 years ago is extremely difficult to understand written in Old English, so I have translated some of the word into Newer English to make it easier to understand.

2 Thessalonians 2:3-12 "3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;  Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things? And now ye know what [is holding him back] that he might be revealed in his time.  For the mystery of [lawlessness is already at] work; only he who now [holds him back will continue to do so], until he be taken out of the way. And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming; Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie. That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness."

The passage quoted above explains Rev 20:7-8 pretty well.  That God will send a strong delusion to all those who "receive not the love of the truth, that they might be saved." And Rev 20:7-8 tells us that God does this in order to prepare the world for battle. And when we read further into verses 9 and 10, then we know that this is the Battle of Armageddon.

Rev 20:9-10 "And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them. And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever."
